The Course

This course is delivered Online via the MHFA Learning Hub. The Online version comprises four online sessions of approximately two hours, each session is preceded by online learning activities and pre-session work.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue.

MHFA won’t teach you to be a therapist. However it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially stop a crisis from happening.

Learning Outcomes

Trained Mental Health First Aiders will have:

LO1: An in depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing.

LO2: Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues.

LO3: Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress.

LO4: Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening.

LO5: Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, GP, HSE or a mix.

What to expect:

Learning takes place over two days, across four manageable sessions. Through a mix of group activities, presentations and discussions, each session is built around a Mental Health First Aid action plan.

Minimum attendees 8, maximum 16 per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn.

Everyone who completes the course gets:

  • A manual to refer to whenever you need it.
  • A workbook including a helpful toolkit to support your own mental health.
  • A certificate of attendance to say you are a Mental Health First Aider.

Research and evaluation has repeatedly demonstrated the effectiveness of MHFA training worldwide.
